Things that surprise new learners

One written Arabic, many spoken ones

Modern Standard Arabic is the shared language of news, books and formal speech. At home, people speak their own dialect, like Egyptian Arabic. Learn Standard to read and follow the news, and add a dialect to chat.

Short vowels aren't written

Everyday texts leave out the short vowels, so كتب can be kataba (he wrote) or kutub (books). Talvo's vocabulary shows the vowel marks, as in كَتَبَ, so you know how each word sounds.

Sun and moon letters

The al- of “the” blends into some letters: الشمس is ash-shams (the sun), but القمر stays al-qamar (the moon).

Talking to a man or a woman

You changes with who you're talking to: كيف حالكَ؟ (kayfa haaluk) to a man and كيف حالكِ؟ (kayfa haaluki) to a woman. Verbs change too.

How Talvo teaches Arabic

  • Modern Standard Arabic is its own course, separate from Egyptian Arabic
  • New words show the short-vowel marks (tashkeel), with romanization alongside
  • Romanized answers are accepted while you learn the alphabet
  • Every unit, from beginner (A1) to advanced (C1), is written around your interests and the words you already know
  • Role-play a café, a market, a taxi or meeting someone new. The tutor speaks first, waits for your answer and corrects you with the reason
  • Use the live interpreter when you're talking with a native speaker for real
  • Every new word goes into your review deck and comes back right before you'd forget it
